Item 04 · TON / HR

Trucking and hauling

The trucks are ours. That matters on a schedule, because a broker can tell you a truck is coming and we can tell you which one, and it matters on a bid, because the haul is usually the largest single line in a dirt job and we are not marking up somebody else's.

Planning numbers, not a quote. Weights move with the pit and the moisture. Rock and soil you buy are figured loose, because base shrinks about a quarter when it is rolled and the finished thickness is what you measured; material you dig is figured with swell, because a hole never gives back the yards it measured. Tell us the job and we will price it by the ton or by the hour.

What we haul

  • Class 2 aggregate base, drain rock, road mix, and cobble
  • Bedding sand, plaster sand, and fill sand
  • Topsoil, compost, and amended soil
  • Excavated soil, out or in
  • Broken concrete and asphalt to a recycler
  • Green waste and orchard removal debris
  • Equipment on lowbeds, to 55 tons
  • Water for dust control, compaction, and fire watch

Which truck fits your site

A transfer carries about 22 yards and needs room to set the trailer down and pick it back up. A belly dump spreads a windrow on the move, which is how base rock gets placed on a long road without a loader touching it. An end dump goes where a transfer set will not fit and is the truck for wet or sticky spoils. A 10-wheeler is the one that fits down a residential driveway.

If you are not sure, tell us the access and the material and we will send the truck that fits. Sending a transfer to a site it cannot turn around in is a wasted hour for both of us.

Rates

Aggregate and soil are usually priced delivered per ton, which folds the material, the haul, and the fuel into one number. Spoils haul-off, equipment moves, and anything with an unpredictable cycle time go hourly, portal to portal, with a minimum. Both get quoted before a truck rolls.

Water trucks

Two thousand and four thousand gallon trucks, for dust control on a haul road, for moisture conditioning ahead of a compactor, and for the days in a North State August when the fire watch requirement in your contract is not optional. Available by the day or on standby.

What trucking runs

ItemRange
Class 2 aggregate base, delivered$38 to $62 per ton
Drain rock, delivered$45 to $75 per ton
Topsoil, delivered$40 to $70 per ton
Transfer or end dump, hourly$135 to $185 per hour
Water truck, per day$900 to $1,500
Lowbed equipment move, local$450 to $1,200 each way

Unit ranges are what this kind of work has been going for in the Sacramento Valley, put here so you can sanity-check a budget. They are not a bid. Quantities, access, haul distance, and the spec move every one of them.

Questions we get

Yes. One load of base rock for a shed pad is a normal call. There is a minimum charge that covers getting the truck there and back, and past two or three loads the per-ton rate takes over.

Length times width times depth, divided by 27, and the calculator on this page does it and tells you the loads. As a rule of thumb, a 12 by 50 foot driveway at four inches of rock is about seven and a half cubic yards, or a bit over eleven tons: one 10-wheeler.

Yes, and it goes to a recycler rather than a landfill, which is usually cheaper. Keep it clean of dirt, rebar is fine, and tell us if there is anything in it that is not concrete.

Regularly. A fair share of our truck hours are for other contractors who need trucks for a week and do not want to own them for a year. Call the yard with your dates.
